Our responsibility

As we are bombarded with all of the political advertisements, the debates and the mailings, we have a responsibility not only to the City of Milwaukee, but to our country.

As we anticipate having a new President lead our country in a time where the national economy is in the worst condition that this country has ever seen, all of our mortgages are in jeopardy, and many of our social programs have been all but killed off. It is our hope that as an organization we be a tool of enlightenment, not tipping the voting scale for any candidate, but tipping the scales on the importance of voting.

The Urban League historical has been an advocate for the electoral process. It is our goal as the Milwaukee Urban League Young Professionals to continue this advocacy, and to engage our community by being a voice of reason, concern and truth.

No matter who wins this Presidential election, we all recognize that history will be made, and I am so excited to be apart of this historic moment! The outcome of this election will be centered on the turnout of the Young Professional demographic, so I want to impress upon all of our members to exercise your right to vote! Take part and pride in having your vote make history.

Lastly, I encourage each of you to do your homework and research each of the candidates. The best voter is an educated voter, and what we try to provide to our members is an opportunity to connect with the professionals in the varying professions to include the political circle. Our time has come, our issue has arrived, and the world is watching us to see what are we are going to respond. The polls that have been reported fall short of including the young professionals, so we have the ability to control the outcome of this election, and many elections to come.

With all that we bring to the table, what do we do on and after November 5, 2008? We have to begin to position ourselves, organizationally, personally and professionally with the political and corporate leadership. We have done a great job thus far, but there is much work that has to be done, and I am confident that we are well on our way to achieve our set goals.

November 4, 2008, go out and vote! Let’s make sure that we all do our part to get everyone we know to the polls. Call your family and friends; especially make sure that our elderly have an opportunity to get to and from the polls.

If you have questions of where you vote, feel free to call our affiliate office at 414-374-5850.

Message from the President of the MULYP

It is with great pleasure that I accept the position of President of the Milwaukee Urban League Young Professionals.

I have been a long supporter of this movement and have served in various capacities to keep the movement going forward, and now I am so blessed to serve in the most honorable positions of President.

MULYP has never been about one individual, therefore there is nothing that I can do without the support, guidance and leadership of you, so I encourage you to work with me as we continue grow this organization to the next level.

With a decade of service in the Milwaukee area, our brand thanks to all of the Presidents prior to me has become synonymous with excellence, and I intend to do nothing different.

I call upon the members and board members alike to stand with me as we impact the City of Milwaukee and the surrounding areas with our greatness. None of us have gotten to where we are without the involvement and influence of others, and now is our turn to mold the next generation of leaders.

I am especially thankful to Alonzo Kelly for his leadership. Our goal is to complete the tasks that he began, and leave a triumphant legacy in his honor. Alonzo is a perfect example of the type of talent and leadership that Milwaukee has. On behalf of the MULYP Board we say thank you for all of your leadership and service!

So, what does the future of the MULYP look like? Our future is bright, and there are great opportunities for each of us to participate in the leadership of this great organization. There are committee chair positions available, that I will be looking to fill within the next coming weeks, as well as our strategic planning meeting on Saturday, October 25 at Children’s Hospital.

I encourage each of you to attend the strategic planning meeting and lend your voice and vision to the future direction of the organization.

I would also like congratulate Shantel Bacchus to the new position of Vice-President. Shantel has been a great asset to the movement. Her leadership as fundraising chair, her vast knowledge and experience in financial service and her stellar community relationships will be her an outstanding Vice-President of the MULYP, so join me in welcoming Shantel Bacchus as our new VP!

The President’s message will be posted on the website on a bi-weekly basis, unless there is time sensitive information that needs to be conveyed. Sean Lowe our membership chair will send out organizational announcement to the general body, as we are trying not to flood your e-mail systems.

If you have questions of me or any of the board members we can all be contacted directly through the website address.

Thank you and I am excited about this opportunity to serve you in this capacity.

Humbly yours,

Richard M. Badger
